At Ecosafe, we believe in giving back to the community and supporting causes that make a real difference in people's lives. This year, we are proud to announce that our chosen charity is Batten Fighters Forever (BFF). In memory of Annabelle, who inspired many with her bravery and zest for life. BFF is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Batten Disease. To support this cause, Ecosafe Group is funding all medals for the Sassy Walk 2024, scheduled for the 28th of September.

Annabelle's Legacy - The Inspiration Behind BFF

Annabelle had a unique spirit, full of joy and enthusiasm, especially for her birthdays. She was always planning the next celebration, embodying a sense of happiness and excitement that was infectious. It was her imaginative mind that coined the name Batten Fighters Forever. To honour Annabelle's memory and her birthday, BFF had organised an annual sponsored walk—aptly named the Sassy Walk—to continue raising awareness about Batten Disease with every step.

What is Batten Disease?

Batten Disease is a rare, inherited disorder of the nervous system that typically begins in childhood. It is part of a group of disorders known as neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs). Children with Batten Disease often experience progressive neurological impairment, which may lead to symptoms such as:

  • Seizures

  • Vision loss

  • Cognitive decline

  • Motor skill deterioration

The disease is caused by the buildup of fatty substances in the brain and other tissues, which eventually leads to cell death. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for Batten Disease, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life. Research and awareness are crucial in the fight to find better treatments and ultimately a cure for this devastating condition.

A Journey of Remembrance and Hope

The Sassy Walk 2024 is the first of its kind, marking a milestone for BFF. This 18-mile walk will take participants along the scenic Castleman Trail, beginning at Christ Church in Creekmoor and culminating in a celebratory event at the Elm Tree Pub in Ringwood. The walk not only commemorates Annabelle but also aims to raise £7,000 for Batten Disease research and support.
