Liz Green, Head of Finance in construction, discussing financial planning at Ecosafe Group

From Accounting Client to Head of Finance at Ecosafe Group.

Meet Liz Green, Head of Finance at Ecosafe Group, who has spent over 20 years in the finance industry. However, Liz’s construction journey was not exactly planned. It followed an unexpected opportunity that turned into a successful career.

“I first got involved with Ecosafe when I was self-employed. Managing the finances for various clients”, Liz explains. “It started small, but as the company grew, so did my role. Before I knew it, I was fully embedded in the business, helping to build its financial strategy.”

Now, seven years later, Liz oversees the company’s finances, ensuring stability and progressing growth in the construction sector.

A career spanning finance, entrepreneurship and fish and chips

Before joining Ecosafe, Liz built an impressive career in finance. She ran her accountancy firm, worked for large accountancy practices, and gained extensive experience managing business finances. But her career path has been far from traditional.

“I’ve always had an entrepreneurial streak”, she says. “While raising my kids, I even ran a dating agency and a fish and chip van - you name it, I’ve done it! But finance has always been my passion.”

This diverse experience gave Liz a unique perspective on business operations, which she now applies to the construction industry.

A day in the life of a head of finance in construction

So, what does a Head of Finance in the construction industry do?

“My role is all about keeping the business financially healthy, Liz explains. I oversee the finance team, manage cash flow and ensure suppliers and employees get paid on time. Additionally, I make sure customers are keeping up with payments. It’s a constant balancing act, but I love it.”

Outside the numbers, Liz is also part of Ecosafe’s senior leadership team, contributing to key business decisions that influence the company’s future.

“Finance is more than just spreadsheets. It's about strategy”, she adds. “We’re always looking ahead, confident we’re in a strong position to grow and adapt to changes in the construction sector.”

Making it as a woman in construction

The construction industry has long been dominated by males, but Liz has only had positive experiences.

“Honestly, the support from the men in this industry has been incredible. People assume it’s an authoritarian environment for women, but the reality is that our biggest cheerleaders are the guys we work with.”

With more women entering leadership roles in construction, Liz believes the industry is becoming better.

“The goal is breaking stereotypes. Finance, project management and surveying are so many career paths in construction beyond the trades. It is an industry that offers monumental opportunities for both women and men.”

Why finance in construction is so rewarding

Despite the challenges of managing finances in a fast-moving industry, Liz would not change a thing.

“I love the logic of finance, but I also love that every day is different, she says. One moment, I’m deep in cash flow planning; the next, I’m making strategic decisions for the business.”

And her favourite part of the job? The people.

“The team at Ecosafe is incredible. We work hard, support each other, and always have a laugh along the way. It makes all the difference.”

Advice for women entering finance and construction

For women considering a career in finance or construction, Liz has some simple but powerful advice:

  • Jump in at the deep end - Don’t let outdated conceptions hold you back. There’s a place for everyone.

  • Be confident - Trust your knowledge and skills. Bring your value to the table.

  • Be adaptable - Construction is fast-paced but exciting. Welcome the challenges.

With her unconventional career path and passion for finance, Liz is proving that success in construction is about building strong businesses, strong teams, and strong futures.

The future of women in construction finance

As more women step into leadership roles, Liz is excited to see the industry continue to flourish.

“The more we highlight different career paths in construction, the more we’ll inspire the next generation to get involved.”

Whether managing budgets, solving financial challenges, or making essential business decisions, Liz is there, pushing Ecosafe Group’s success and is a true example of why women belong in construction.

UK construction industry skills shortage

The UK construction industry faces a skills shortage, with 225,000 additional workers needed by 2027, according to the latest CITB report.

But construction is not just about bricklayers and electricians - strong financial leadership is integral to keeping projects on track, managing budgets, and ensuring sustainable business growth. That is where professionals like Liz, our Head of Finance, contribute immensely.

With the sector lacking skilled workers, now is the time to break stereotypes and encourage more women in construction. While finance may not be the first role that comes to mind, it is the foundation of every successful business. With 20+ years of experience, Liz proves how vital financial management is to the industry.

Summary

At Ecosafe, we know that career paths in construction are not always traditional. Liz’s journey from running her own accountancy business to leading our finance team highlights the diverse opportunities within the sector. Whether in finance, administration, project management, or trade roles, there is a place for skilled professionals in construction.
