Construction is not typically the first industry that comes to mind for someone with a background in fashion and retail, but for Jo, making the switch was the right move.

In this interview for Celebrating Women in Construction, we sit down with Jo to talk about her journey into the construction sector, what it is like working in a dynamic role at Ecosafe Group’s Sussex office, and how she has found being a woman in the industry.

From retail to construction: A career change

So, what made you choose to work in construction?

“I never actually set out to work in construction specifically. I just knew I wanted an office-based role. I’d spent my entire career in customer-facing jobs and wanted a change. The idea of changing positions into a role where I wasn’t constantly face-to-face with customers appealed to me.”

What were you doing before joining Ecosafe?

“My background is in fashion retail and cosmetics. I worked for big brands like Debenhams, managing stores, overseeing multiple locations as an area manager, and even working in HR. It was fast-paced, constantly changing, and involved a lot of problem-solving skills that, funnily enough, have been extremely useful in my role at Ecosafe.”

How long have you been with Ecosafe Group?

“I joined in July 2024, so I’m still relatively new, but it already feels like I’ve been here much longer.”

What’s it like working at Ecosafe Group?

What does your day-to-day role involve?

“I’m responsible for scheduling the carpenters, multi-trades, decorators, and fire stoppers, who conduct work on behalf of Southern Housing. That means coordinating jobs, updating reports and spreadsheets, handling post-audits, and keeping everything running smoothly. I also speak with Southern Housing and the residents daily to ensure everything is on track.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?

“The team, 100%. Everyone is supportive, and there’s a great atmosphere in the office. Construction might seem like a completely different planet from my previous career, but the people here make it an easy transition.”

Being a woman in construction

How have you found working in a male-dominated industry?

“In construction at Ecosafe Group, we have a strong female presence, especially in the office. It would be great to see even more women working out on-site in the future. Although, it’s encouraging to be part of a company that values diversity and gives equal opportunities to everyone.”

Thinking about the future

What advice would you give to other women considering a career in construction?

“Don’t be put off by the industry’s reputation. There are so many other roles within construction that have nothing to do with being on-site, and there’s a place for everyone. Construction is a rewarding career!”

Jo’s journey confirms that career changes can open doors to new opportunities, even in industries you have not considered. At Ecosafe Group, every role has a substantial part in scheduling contractors, managing social housing repairs, or working on-site - keeping homes safe and well-maintained.

If you are considering a career in construction, whether in Poole, Dorset, or Sussex, go for it! You will not regret it.
