Empowering Independence: A Transformative Home Adaptation Project

Overview

Ecosafe Group was commissioned by BCP Council to undertake a significant home extension project designed to support the unique needs of a disabled young man in Bournemouth.

The project, initiated to provide more independence and accessibility for the individual, also aimed to offer the family a safer and more contented living environment. Despite facing unforeseen challenges, the project was completed successfully, highlighting our dedication to delivering high-quality solutions.

Project Scope

The project began with site setup in mid-September 2023, and the main construction works were completed by the end of December. However, due to additional snagging, the final touches were completed in mid-January 2024.

The extension was specifically designed to create a living space that would allow the young man, who uses a wheelchair, to live more independently. Prior to this, he had been housed in another part of the house, which limited his mobility and autonomy. The new extension provided a dedicated space with a hoist system, a fully accessible wet room, and all necessary adaptations to cater to his needs.

Key Challenges

During the excavation for the footing, a 6-inch drain covered in gravel was discovered. This required an unexpected excavation to a depth of two metres and the need to seek permission to redirect the drain. This discovery led to a 2/3-week delay and incurred additional costs, which were agreed upon with the client to ensure the project could proceed smoothly.

Additional work was carried out alongside the main extension, including the replacement of the kitchen and boiler by the Gas team and Kitchens team, and the repair of a ceiling in the kitchen that had been damaged by a leak during the COVID period. Ecosafe Group coordinated these activities to minimise disruption to the residents and ensure a seamless integration of all works.

Client Communication

Throughout the project, we maintained regular communication with the resident, providing updates every Friday on the planned works for the following week. This proactive approach ensured the resident was always informed, and it helped build trust and transparency.

Additional Works and Compliance

Alongside the core adaptations, Ecosafe Group also installed fire doors, PVC doors, and windows as specified in the project requirements. A new boiler was fitted, and a gas safety certificate was provided. All these installations were inspected and signed off by Building Control, ensuring full compliance with regulatory standards.

Results

The project has had a significant impact on the family. The young man now enjoys greater autonomy, with features such as the hoist system and wet room making everyday tasks more manageable and less reliant on others. The family benefits from a more spacious and functional environment, allowing them all to live with greater independence.

The successful completion of this project, despite unexpected challenges and delays, demonstrates Ecosafe Group's ability to adapt and deliver on complex projects. The cooperation between different teams for the kitchen and boiler replacement, alongside our own works, further illustrates our commitment to seamless project management.

Conclusion

This home extension for BCP Council is a prime example of Ecosafe Group’s ability to deliver bespoke, high-quality construction solutions that truly make a difference in residents' lives. By overcoming unexpected challenges and maintaining clear communication with the client, we ensured a positive outcome that meets both the residents’ needs and regulatory standards. The project showcases our commitment to improving the quality of life for all our clients, regardless of their unique requirements.
